Beta Chapter
University of the District of Columbia

Beta Chapter was chartered October 1923 with students in attendance at the Indiana Normal School (since renamed Indiana State University) of Terre Haute. Sigma Gamma Rho was the first black sorority at this campus. Conditions at that time were not conducive to having a Black Sorority and by 1939 the chapter became inactive.

Beta Chapter was reorganized at Miner Teacher's College in Washington, D.C. on November 19, 1949 by Soror Annie Neville, Northeast Regional Syntaktes. On July 1, 1955, Miner Teacher's College and Wilson Teacher's College merged to become the University of the District of Columbia Teacher's College. The first line for Beta Chapter under the new college was in 1957, but it became inactive from 1960-1968. On April 12, 1968, the Chapter was again reactivated, this time by Soror Alma Hawkins, now serving as the Northeast Region Syntaktes with ten Sorors. Beta Chapter remained active until the late 1980's, but was briefly inactive until March 7, 1992, when it was reactivated by two transfer Sorors: Karla Brady Bullock, DaRell Jones; and three new Sorors: Shirley LeMelle, Lisa Jones, and Donna Lloyd Tate.

Closing out the 20th century, Beta was once again reactivated on November 13, 1999 with new Soror Anette Lofton-Bing.  In the new millennium, Sigma welcomed Soror Edith Guemadji in December 2001.  On February 26, 2006, four new members joined the ranks of Sigma Women:  Leatha Graham, Shari Goldston, Keva Fayson, and Kelley Brooks.  These ladies are excited to get moving in their new roles with Sigma Gamma Rho!

Omicron Phi Chapter
American University

Omicron Phi Chapter was chartered at the Northeast Region Area I Meeting by the Northeast Regional Syntaktes, Inez Vanable.  The ceremony was conducted on September 11, 1999 in McDowell Hall at American University. Soror Clarybel Peguero was the advisor to the charter group and guided the intake process. The seven charter members were:

Tanisha Harris
Janna Carter
Leila Green
Aronya Waller
Tamika Vaughan
LaToya Dupree
Jina Lewis

Since Omicron Phi's chartering, Sigma Gamma Rho has made a presence at the University. The ladies have been involved in many community service projects, including the Annual Sleep Out for the Homeless, Operation BigBookBag and a fundraiser for the Rejesta V. Perry Birthright Program. The Sorors have also been active on campus participating in a variety of clubs and organizations.
